Kayelle Allen's Lights Out Blog Tour

What if today was "lights out?"

Read Lights Out in The Expanding Universe #SpaceOpera #NewRelease by @KayelleAllenIf you knew this was your last day to live, what would you do? Would you face the end with a clear conscience? Would you fight for one more day?
Look for that person you wronged and make it right? Run away? Turn and fight? What would you do?

In Lights Out by Kayelle Allen, the hero knows his end is near. Instead of running, Tornahdo makes a choice. He will face death with a clear conscience and the knowledge that his death will serve mankind. He will join...
GHOST CORPS

He can save mankind. After he does one important thing. Die.

Join the Ghost Corps, they said. You'll live forever, they said. You'll save mankind, they said. They didn't say that to do it, first he had to die.

When Tornahdo signs on the dotted line, he puts his life into the steady hands of the mighty Ghost Corps. Three grisly deaths and three agonizing resurrections later, he's assigned duty on Enderium Six.

He's facing his most dangerous mission yet, the very reason the corps exists.

Do they expect him to win? Fat chance. Tornahdo and his team are already dead and this mission is codenamed "Lights Out." No, there's more to this than he can see.

To discover the truth, he must face an unbeatable, unkillable enemy, and this time--somehow--find a way to keep himself alive...

Excerpt, Lights Out by Kayelle Allen

The air reeked of antiseptic and starch stiffened the pillowcase. If only the mind-numbing jabbering would stop.

Tornahdo pried open his eyes. The flattened blood bag above him, stenciled equipment and gray walls screamed military hospital.

He'd died. Again.

Spanish curses slipped out. His abuela would've taken a switch to him. He made the sign of the cross and kissed his fingertips.

After yanking the tube out of his arm, he pressed a thumb over the entry point. Thankfully, this time, he wasn't writhing on the floor in agony. Well, not yet.

A faceless android in a Ghost Corps uniform loomed over a bank of equipment displaying Tornahdo's name and vitals. First impression was right. Military hospital.

The weapons-grade yapping continued.

"Did you hear?" a youthful voice bragged. "He killed six of 'em last night."

"Yeah, but they don't stay dead. They never do."

"If Ultras didn't come back to life, their plasma wouldn't bring our own people back."

The transfusion of enemy blood healed the hole in Tornahdo's arm in seconds. He thumbed off the red smear and rolled over on the gurney.

An open door led to a sink and toilet built to let gravity do its work. Which meant this was a planet. You hadn't lived until you were in space, floating in zero gravity while your body's final twitches sent your corpse spinning.

Notices on the wall confirmed this was San Xavier in the Colonies of Man. Same place he'd bought it the first time.

This was getting old.

Guest Promo (CIII) Daisy Banks on Blog Tour

I'm excited as today I host again a great fellow author coming to us form U.K, Daisy Banks. She doesn't come empty handed. She brings  us her latest release Christmas Carols, as part of a tour, as well as a recipe for Eau de Cologne. You can find more such interesting, useful recipes on Daisy's blog. I can hardly wait to try it. I love perfumes.

                                  Christmas Carols Blog Tour.

Thank you, Carmen, for your kind offer to help me celebrate the release of my new book Christmas Carols, published by Liquid Silver Books on the 10th of August.
I know readers might think it a little odd to be thinking about Christmas in August but in Victorian England, where my story is set, people were used to starting their Christmas preparations early. One gift that might be made is Eau de Cologne. The oils made from summer flowering plants must be infused when the plants are ready so preparation begins much earlier in the year. Cologne appears in Christmas Carols as Alice has scented handkerchiefs and lavender water she uses on her hair.
This recipe for Eau de Cologne uses a range of oils. If you buy the oils make sure you get them from a reliable source and they are pure.
12 drops of oil of bergamot
12 drops of oil of lemon
20 drops of oil of orange
3 drops of neroli oil
3 drops of oil of rosemary
4 fluid ounce of Vodka
2 tablespoons of spring  water
Add the oils to the vodka and stir well. Cover and leave for 48 hours.
Add the spring water and stir again. Leave for another 48 hours or up to 4 weeks if you can wait that long.
Stir and strain through filter paper.
Dilute with a little more water if the scent is too strong.
Bottle and use or present as a gift to a friend.

Excerpt
Alice washed her face. She peered into the mirror above her washstand as she prepared to go out again after taking tea at home. She scrubbed hard with a towel until her cheeks appeared rosy, but her ablutions did nothing to calm her uncertainty. Should she attend the recital tonight? Would people think it quite respectable for her to go unaccompanied? Perhaps she shouldn’t have bought the ticket. The terrible worry people might stare or think her an oddity remained ever present, but the lure of the music gnawed at her soul.
As the vicar had said so many times on his visits to encourage her to rejoin society in some small way, “You can’t stay in for the rest of your days and never go anywhere or meet anyone.”
Surely, it couldn’t be wrong to want to listen to such wonderful playing as that of Mr. Grafton?
She plaited another layered row into her hair and pinned it up with the others, before placing her small black bonnet on top. After she’d tweaked the bonnet to set right, she secured it with a jet hat pin and sighed.
Black.
It might be wicked to think it, but she had grown heartily tired of black. She’d worn nothing else since Cyril’s death and some days it seemed such a long time. Using the enamel topped buttonhook to help, she redid the six open buttons on her bodice, put on the short swag-backed jacket, wrapped her black silk scarf around her neck, and picked up her gloves. One last glance in the glass showed a sober and tidy person. Sorrowful, apprehensive eyes stared back. All this fretting must stop. There was no reason she shouldn’t attend a church recital. After all, it wasn’t as if there would be dancing.
She picked up her cologne-scented, initialed handkerchief, and sniffed the lavender fragrance, before putting it into her pocket and strolling through the house. At the door, she put on her coat and gloves, took her umbrella from the stand and hooked the curved handle over her arm. Ready, despite the butterflies in her tummy, for her first outing in more months than she could remember, she glanced to the clock. Six forty-five, and she had plenty of time.
Heels tapping on the blue brick pavement, she walked toward the church that stood at the bottom of the hill from her home. Several carriages passed by in the road, one or two bicycles too, and people on foot. She surmised they all made their way in the same direction. The lure of the organ recitals at Holy Trinity Church drew crowds, or they had done since Mr. Grafton took the post of organist.

Blurb
Stephen Grafton, the blind organist at Holy Trinity Church, is gaining a reputation for his fine playing and compositions. Alice Broadbrace’s initial venture back into society after years in deep mourning brings her to the notice of the talented organist, and he offers her the opportunity to sing a solo carol to his accompaniment. His courage convinces her to find her own, while her charm entices him into thoughts of romance. A difficult walk in a snow storm is only the beginning of Stephen and Alice’s journey to happiness. Enjoy this sweet Victorian tale of talent and love blossoming.

Guest Promo (LXVI) Medieval Monday

I'm delighted to host on this round of Medieval Monday, the lovely author Barbara Bettis and her  novel
                                  THE HEART OF THE PHOENIX

 Blurb:
Some call him a ruthless mercenary; she calls him the knight of her heart.

Memories
LadyEvelynn’s childhood hero is home—bitter, hard, tempting as sin. And haunted by secrets. A now-grown Evie offers friendship, but Sir Stephen's cruel rejection crushes her, and she resolves to forget him. Yet when an unexpected war throws them together, she finds love isn’t so easy to dismiss. If only the king hadn’t betrothed her to another.

Can be cruel
Sir Stephenlives a double life while he seeks the treacherous outlaws who murdered his friends. Driven by revenge, he thinks his heart is closed to love. His childhood shadow, Lady Evie, unexpectedly challenges that belief. He rebuffs her, but he can’t forget her, although he knows she’s to wed the king’s favorite.

And deadly
When his drive for vengeance leads to Evie’s kidnapping, Stephen must choose between retribution and the love he’s denied too long. Surely King John will see reason.Convict the murderers; convince the king. Simple.Until a startling revelation threatens everything.

Excerpt:

At first, Evie thought it was the thud of her headache. Then the pounding came again, louder. She groaned and turned over. Opening her eyes told nothing; the blackness in the cabin was impenetrable.

“Marie?” Her voice rasped in a dry throat. Blasted tears.

No one answered. The girl must still be on deck. Evie might as well have left Marie behind, for all the assistance the maid provided. With a groan, she swung her feet over the side of the bunk and felt her way along the wall toward the sound of another insistent knock.

“A moment,” she called. “I’m coming.” Who had the nerve to wake her in what must be

the middle of the night? Hah. Need she even wonder? Her toe collided with something, and she yelped as she landed on her knees on the wood plank floor. Just what she needed.A broken foot.

The door burst open, bringing with it a dim light. “What’s wrong?” Stephen’s deep voice filled the room. “Where’s the damned lantern?”

“If I knew, I would have lighted it.” Blasted man. Did he think she enjoyed stumbling around in the dark? He acted as if she did so just to plague him.

Holding a shielded ship’s lantern high, he stepped toward the desk. “Here it is. Where’s that light skirt who’s supposed to be your companion?”

“Leave Marie alone. I wanted privacy and gave her permission go above.” Never mind that Evie had just complained about the same thing. He had no right to do so.

“What do you want?” she asked. “Is something wrong?”

“A little late to ask that, isn’t it?” He bent to coax the cabin lantern to flame.

“Oh, for the love of heaven. Stop plaguing me. Why are you here?”

“I thought you’d like to know the identity of our fellow passenger.”

“At this hour? Could you not have waited until morning?” Sweet Mary, preserve her patience. He was the most maddening man alive.

Light flared in the cabin’s shuttered lantern, throwing a shadow across his face, reminding Evie of another reason he should not be here. Her body instantly throbbed to life.

She pressed her palms against her stomach and inhaled. Calm. She needed calm. He was not the most beautiful man she’d ever beheld. He did not possess the power to heat her blood to boiling.

He did not care that she thought of him night and day.

That much was true, for certain.

“I have news that will make the rest of your trip joyful.”

His words centered her whirling mind, and Evie eyed him warily. What news could possible make her happy right now?

She ventured a guess. “You are leaving? Your second in command, the delightful Sir Macsen, will accompany me the rest of the way home?”

“Much better.”

Evie could tell Stephen was angry now by the way he glowered and roared in that whispery sort of way no one else could hear, but left her with no doubt of his displeasure.

“Your betrothed.” He bent and scooped her off the floor.

“What? What about him?”

“That’s the identity of the illustrious lord who’s sharing passage with us.”

“You’re drunk. And put me down. I’m perfectly capable of getting up on my own.”

“Be quiet. You have blood on your leg.”

“Of course I do. I tripped and fell trying to answer your pounding when you could easily have opened—” His words finally penetrated her throbbing head. “I’m bleeding?”

Oh, blast. The contents of her—empty—stomach churned. She attended the villagers’ hurts, bound the cuts and scrapes of servants and their children. The sight of their blood bothered her not a whit. But her own? Black spots danced at the corners of her vision, becoming larger and larger until she heard Stephen’s voice.

“Evie, Evie. What the hell?”

His voice echoed so far away. If she didn’t know better, she’d vow he sounded alarmed. Perhaps she’d close her eyes for a moment. As the ringing in her ears crescendoed, she recalled

his words. Betrothed.

Her betrothed was on board?

Dear Lord, just let me die.
