Book Spotlight Harbinger Wake-Robin Ridge Book 3

I am pleased to have as guest, again, Marcia, the lovely host from The Write Stuff and a prolific author. She brings us her latest release
                       Harbinger Wake-Robin Ridge
                                          Book 3

 Blurb:

Continuing in the tradition of Wake-Robin Ridge and A Boy Named Rabbit, Marcia Meara's North Carolina mountain series takes a shivery turn with the Appalachian Legend of Ol' Shuck, the Harbinger of Death.

“. . . he felt the wet slide of the dog’s burning hot tongue on his face, and the scrape of its razor sharp teeth against the top of his head. A white-hot agony of crushing pain followed, as the jaws began to close.”

The wine-red trillium that carpets the forests of the North Carolina Mountains is considered a welcome harbinger of spring—but not all such omens are happy ones. An Appalachian legend claims the Black Dog, or Ol' Shuck, as he's often called, is a harbinger of death. If you see him, you or someone you know is going to die.

But what happens when Ol' Shuck starts coming for you in your dreams? Nightmares of epic proportions haunt the deacon of the Light of Grace Baptist Church, and bring terror into the lives of everyone around him. Even MacKenzie Cole and his adopted son, Rabbit, find themselves pulled into danger.

When Sheriff Raleigh Wardell asks Mac and Rabbit to help him solve a twenty-year-old cold case, Rabbit’s visions of a little girl lost set them on a path that soon collides with that of a desperate man being slowly driven mad by guilt.

As Rabbit’s gift of the Sight grows ever more powerful, his commitment to those who seek justice grows as well, even when their pleas come from beyond the grave.

North Carolina Mountains

RABBIT’S SILENCE TOLD Mac almost as much as his frown did. Something was bothering his son. Worry showed on the boy’s face and in his body language, as the two of them walked away from the parked Jeep, and headed up the long driveway toward the Birdwell place. Full of eager chatter about his reimagined control module on the drive over, Rabbit’s mood had changed the minute they climbed out of the vehicle.

“You want to talk about what’s bothering you?”

Shoulders hunched upward in a half-hearted shrug, Rabbit didn’t say anything for a few more steps, but then he slowed, scanning the area to each side of them. “Don’t you feel nothin’ different today, Daddy?”

“Different how?”

Another hunch of those narrow shoulders. “Just … different. It don’t feel so good here right now. Feels like somethin’s waitin’.”

Mac came to a dead halt. “Waiting? What do you mean? Like waiting for us? Is someone here?” He’d assumed all the tire tracks in the drive were from their previous visits, but maybe not. He studied the impressions left in the dry, powdery clay, but he couldn’t tell how old they were.

Rabbit stayed by his side, peering more closely at the drive, too. “I ain’t never learnt to read tracks an’ such. Grampa was always plannin’ to teach me someday, but … well … I guess we just run out of somedays. Can you tell anything by lookin’ at these here?”

Mac confessed he couldn’t. “Maybe we’ll get some books on tracking. Well, tracking animals and stuff, at least. It would be fun to learn how together, wouldn’t it?”

At that, Rabbit perked up for a minute. “I’d like that a lot. It’d make Grampa happy to know I was learnin’ ‘bout it, too, even if he ain’t here to teach me hisself.”

They stood side by side, staring up the road in silence, and Mac wondered whether coming today had been a good idea, after all. “Maybe we should leave, Rabbit. We can come back another day.”

With a shake of his head, Rabbit started walking again. “I don’t think nothin’s gonna hurt us. It’s just a weird ol’ feelin’ … like breath bein’ held. Like somethin’ bigger than we are is waitin’ to see what comes next. Bigger than people, I mean, not just you an’ me. I can’t ‘splain it no better than that.”

“But it doesn’t feel like we’re in danger?”

The boy shook his head again. “No. But the woods is awful still, like even the critters are waitin’ to see what’s comin’.”

Eyeing the trees around them, Mac realized Rabbit was right. The woods were still as death. No birdsong, no animals rustling in the heavy underbrush, no breeze stirring the leaves. It was eerie and disturbing.

He considered leaving again. “Maybe we really should go, Rabbit.”

“But what if we went on home an’ come back another time, an’ it weren’t no different? We’re already here. Reckon it won’t hurt to walk a little bit closer, anyway. If anything starts feelin’ worse, we can always leave then, right?”

Mac nodded his agreement, and they continued on their way, but he decided then and there, he’d bring his shotgun next time. There was a reason for the old expression, ‘better safe than sorry,’ and where his son—his whole family—was concerned, Mac didn’t intend to end up sorry, this time. No, he promised himself. Not ever again.

~~~
THE OPPRESSIVE SILENCE of their surroundings kept both Mac and Rabbit more subdued than usual. They trudged up the long drive, each lost in his own thoughts, for another quarter mile, and rounded a bend, just as a bloody apparition burst out of the woods and raced directly toward them.
Mac immediately stationed himself between Rabbit and the frantic man, who screamed at the sight of them. Eyes wild and arms windmilling all over the place, he skidded to a stop three feet away, gasping and wheezing. Blood dripped down his face from numerous small cuts, and sweat plastered his red hair to his skull.
Before Mac could ask what was wrong, or offer help, the man shrieked, “Get outta my way!” and shoved past them.
Stunned, Mac watched him lurch down the road, yelling every step of the way, and glancing back over his shoulder again and again, as though he were being chased by the hounds of Hell. His screams grew fainter until after a few minutes, they could no longer hear him at all.
Rabbit tugged on Mac’s arm, eyes wide in his pale face. “Daddy? Can we go home now?”
“I think we should, partner. I don’t know what was chasing that man, and I don’t want to find out, either. You were right to think something’s wrong here, today.”
“Ain’t nothin’ wrong, now, though. Listen.”
Sure enough. The birds were calling again, and a soft wind shushed through the pines. Off in the distance, a fox barked. The woods had returned to normal.
“Huh. You’re right, Rabbit. Everything seems fine, now. But you still want to go home?”
“Yes, please. Might be, I got some thinkin’ to do.”
They headed back toward the Jeep, quiet once more, though for very different reasons, this time. As they approached the vehicle, Mac asked, “Rabbit? Do you know what happened to that all-wrong feeling you had earlier?”
“Yes. It went away as soon as the man did.”
Guest Promo (CLXII) Summer #Romantic Idea Sheri Fredricks
Romantic Date Ideas to Try this Summer
As summer hits and kids explode from school in a frenzy of inactivity, it’s important for couples to carve out time for themselves. As a romance author, I have jot down date ideas. If I need an idea for a scene I’m writing, I skim through and see if any of them fit.
Let me know what you think of my ideas:
1.     Yard/Estate Sales
Rummaging through someone else’s stuff may seem weird at first, but you’ll likely find all sorts of items to laugh about together or something that brings up a special memory. And, you never know, you might find something great at an incredible bargain. What’s more romantic than saving money?
2.     Have a Picnic
For something a little different, grab a basket or a cooler and get inventive! Prepare something in advance, or simply toss in a good baguette, artisanal cheese, and quality deli meat, and treat yourselves to a meal in a local park, field, or your own backyard. Don’t forget the most important part of any picnic -- plenty of chilled rose wine!
3.     Go Wine Tasting
Sitting among the vineyards and sampling a winery's latest isn’t as pretentious as it sounds—it can be downright cheap. Tastings at most wineries are under $10, and some are even free. Vineyards offer beautiful landscapes and can be quite romantic. The perfect scenery to express your summer love.
4.     Float a Boat
If you live near a body of water, chances are you have access to a boat. Bring fishing rods, bait or lures, and spend a relaxing day drinking beers and bobbing on the water. At the best, you’ll catch dinner. If nothing nibbles except your date, you both can always jump in the water for a quick dip.
If you have ideas to share, I’d love to hear them.
Experience has taught her to deny herself the love of a male, but the gruff Centaur is different. He doesn't push his expectations on her, only his healing nature.
When Rhycious loses his grip on reality, he believes his inability to control his disorder will drive Patience away. Nevertheless, desire flares, and Patience draws him close. Kidnapping and betrayal turn their mythic joint venture into a deadly bout.
Will their love endure when survival hinges on trusting each other?
Remedy Maker – Excerpt
Scene setup:Shapeshifting Centaur Rhycious, in his human form, has encountered rebels who wish to overthrow the Centaur kingdom:
*****
Backed by a roar of the hundred ghostly Centaurs who terrorized him in a PTSD alternate reality, Rhycious heaved to his feet. With a determination equal to the dead coming back to life, he thrust his sword upwarddiagonally, catching Dryas by surprise. The honed edge of his trusty weapon sliced the traitorous soldier’s thigh wide open.
Blood spurted and Dryas cried out, stumbling away. Inertia carried Rhy’s blade along its path of destruction and then rocketed down. His mind locked on a time long ago when the Reaper welded crushing blows. He tightened his single-handed grip on the sword’s leather-bound handle andcarved a clean line deep across the enemy’s cheek.
Stretched to their limit, the ligaments in his shoulder burned as he cleaved the heavy sword. With two powerful forward lunges, he confiscated additional ground. Then spinning on the ball of his foot, Rhycious streaked for the screaming Nymph.
Guest Promo (CLXI) Summer #Romantic Idea Keta Diablo
                                Chasing the Dead
Tagline: A sinister ghost is out for revenge. Madrid, Deacon and Sacheen must stay one step ahead of the ghoul and reach the hacienda.
Blurb:
In 1884 New Mexico, Madrid Arrende finds herself kidnapped by the Apache. Determined to rescue her, her wealthy father realizes there is only one man capable of bringing her back alive...Deacon Bannister. Deacon doesn't give one whit about the large sum of money Don Erasmos Arrende has offered him to find his daughter. He  only cares about bringing the woman he left at the altar a year ago home.
A ghost is terrorizing the Apache village and the young maiden, Sacheen, has been banished by her People for unleashing Uday's wrath. Now, Deacon, Madrid and Sacheen must flee for their lives across the rugged New Mexico landscape with the evil spirit in hot pursuit.
Will they make it back alive to Madrid's father's hacienda or will Deacon lose Madrid forever?
Setup and Excerpt: Madrid and Sacheen confront the ghost
Sacheen ignited Maddie's torch and both women scrambled over the half-wall to light the packets of sage. The moon glinted off a shadowy form sweeping past a line of trees to Maddie's right. Dios, the ghost! With gooseflesh rising on her arms, she called out to Sacheen, "Hurry! Light your bundles and go inside with Deacon."
A circle of fire from a dozen piles of sage lit up the sky around the shelter. The wind moaned and wailed, sounding like the sorrowful lament of Scottish bagpipes. What other magic and manipulations had the dead spirit learned in the underworld since Maddie last saw him?
With a look of startled horror, Sacheen shouldered her. "Do you see him?"
"I thought I told you to go inside. We must not show him fear."
"Do you see him!?"
Tendrils of darkness slipped in as the wraith advanced. Maddie shivered when his visage manifested in her line of vision. More terrifying than any specter she'd ever seen, a haze of gray mist swirled around his translucent form. A quiver hung from his shoulder stocked with stone-headed arrows—a sign he'd taken the form of a native from ancient history. Steeped in blood, his clothing hung in tatters around his massive frame—a vest made of animal hides, a breechcloth and fringed leggings. Maddie's gaze traveled to his painted, pock-marked face. Her insides quivered and ropes of tension knotted every cord and fiber of her body.
 Bleary, unearthly eyes turned to Sacheen when the spirit raised a hand with claw-like fingers and pointed at her chest. The wind, much like the sound of women wailing, keened into the deafening silence. Fire exploded from the ghost's eyes—flames the fires of Hell couldn't compete with.
"Yes." Maddie fought to keep her voice calm and even. "I see him. His hunger for you permeates the air."
Sacheen shouted above the roar and chaos. "You are not welcome here! Hear my words, Uday, you are tats-an. You are dead!”
Maddie peered at the girl through the dim light. Uday? She spoke his name?
"It is I, Sacheen, and I do not fear you chidn. Hear my power:
Hinamaya hinamaya hinamay Chee Chi Yo
 Hinamay chee chi yo hinna may chee chi yo
 Hinna hinna hey ya hinna hinna hey yo
A cry of anguish and rage melded, knifed through the dank, still air. The maiden couldn't see him but stood tall before her imaginary tormentor, her aura shimmering like molten glass. "You are like the dust-storm, nothing but a shiver in the air. Do you hear me? I did not want you in life and will not accept you in death. You are yah-ik-tee, no longer with us!"
#RomanticIdea
When summer comes to the Midwest, we think lakes!
One way I love to pass a sunny afternoon is to pack a picnic lunch and head for the water on a Pontoon boat. What could be more romantic than spending a lazy day cruising the lake? The crappies are biting, the sun’s sharing its awesome warmth and the cooler is filled with our favorite beverages.
This is also a great time to catch up on my reading (a romance novel, of course). As the sun sets, we head on over to one of the many restaurants on the lake and enjoy a delicious meal together.
Now this is my idea of Romance!
Happy sailing and happy reading! ~ Keta ~
