How long have you been writing romance?
I’ve been writing romance ever since I can remember. I first started submitting manuscripts to publishers in the late 80’s – starting, as we all did, with Mills and Boone and then progressing onto Little Black Dress. I landed an agent in 1990 (Dot Lumley) but due to pressure of work (I was a primary school deputy head teacher at the time) I had to temporarily abandon my fledgling writing career and concentrate on the day job. After taking early retirement from teaching in 2008 I was able to return to my first love, writing.
What is your favourite sub-genre of romance?
I would have to say romantic comedy. When I was working, I was too tired at night to read War and Peace and Dostoevsky for pleasure. I wanted something light, witty and entertaining and rom coms fitted the bill. If I was to branch out further I’d head for romantic suspense but with lots of action and humour, not pages of description or the characters’ inner thoughts.
Where does Charlee work?
Charlee works for a scurrilous, gossip-mongering magazine called What’cha. To sell copies of the magazine the editor demands that his staff get the skinny on celebrities and TV and sports personalities by whatever means possible. The more outrageous the story, the better, in his opinion. Charlee sees her internship at What’cha as the stepping stone to becoming an investigative journalist.
How does she meet Rafael?
Charlee is given an invitation to an exclusive Book Award Evening being organised by What’ch because of her friendship with Poppy Walker, the proprietor/owner of What’cha’s daughter. When she gets to the venue she discovers that she, and other interns from What’cha have been invited there under false pretences i.e. they are to act as waiters. At the end of the long shift, the glass of champagne she has hidden away for herself is purloined by the hero and she has to fight for it, verbally. In doing so she insults the hero without realising he is the winner of the prestigious Book Award.
Is it love at first sight for them?
Of course. But neither of them knows it at the time. He thinks she’s a bit of an irresponsible madcap and she thinks he’s an arrogant ‘posh boy’ who’s good for nothing but swanning around award ceremonies. As my old mate Dostoevsky put it: “We sometimes encounter people, even perfect strangers, who begin to interest us at first sight, somehow suddenly, all at once, before a word is spoken.’ That.
What is the photo shoot assignment?
To test her mettle, Charlee is sent undercover to get photos of a young royal ‘playing away from home.’ If she passes the test she becomes Rafael’s (very) temporary partner and will be sent on a more important assignment to get photographs of a Russian Supermodel looking dishevelled and less than perfect at a Boot camp for Brides. Unknown to Charlee, she’s being sent into the boot camp as a Trojan horse in order to give Rafael’s access to the camp to investigate the drug smuggling activities of the model’s Russian boyfriend.
Where is the Boot Camp for Brides?
The Boot camp is set on the Norfolk Marshes in a real village called Thornham. Some of the action also takes place in What’cha’s offices in Canary Wharf and Rafael’s mews cottage in Chelsea.
Tell us what you are working on at the moment.
For Book Three I’m returning to Scotland. In this novel I tell the story of Ishabel Stuart who is at a crossroads in her life. Her father has just died, her fiancé has been unfaithful to her and she questions whether her job as a designer is what she really wants from life. She returns home to Eilean na Sgairbh on the west coast of Scotland to realise her dream of establishing a small artistic community there. Unfortunately, when she arrives at her family home (which is run as a bed and breakfast by her Aunt Esme) she finds Brodie – an All American Boy, staying there. She simply wants peace and quiet but everything about gorgeous, sexy Brodie unsettles her. Inevitably, she finds herself attracted to him and starts to rely on him for help and support during a difficult time in her life. However, she soon suspects him of having a hidden agenda and not being totally open about his reasons for staying on remote, beautiful Cormorant Island . . .
